Both answers are describing the same market. The difference is what happens before the quote: an open-ended brief genuinely can cost anywhere in that range, so agencies price the uncertainty. A disciplined scope collapses the range. This guide shows the real numbers at each tier, what actually moves an app between them, and how to keep a first build near the bottom of the range without shipping something throwaway. One change on our side: since September 2026 Fantom Labs is an AI architecture and integration studio, so app builds are delivered inside an AI engagement and quoted within the project rather than sold as fixed packages. Most engagements start with the $1,500 AI opportunity audit on our pricing page, credited toward any build booked within 30 days, and the Fantom Labs figures below are historical benchmarks.
Perth app development prices: what we charged
These were the published fixed packages we sold until September 2026. No range theatre: the "from" tiers moved only when your scope added named features, and the blueprint existed precisely so that conversation happened before the build was priced. They are here as a benchmark for reading other Perth quotes, not as a current offer.
| Package | Price | Timeline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product blueprint | $2,500–$3,500 fixed | 1–2 weeks | Paid discovery sprint: scope, data model, delivery plan, and a build price you could hold us to |
| MVP / proof of concept | from $12,000 | 6–10 weeks | Validating a product with the smallest build that gives real answers |
| Cross-platform app | from $18,000 | 10–14 weeks | One codebase shipping to both iOS and Android |
| Full platform | from $18,000 | 10–16 weeks | SaaS products, dashboards, and operational systems with backends |
| Advanced app | from $32,000 | 14–20 weeks | Real-time features, payments, offline sync, and an admin portal |
Every package included product direction, UX and UI design, engineering, testing, and deployment to production, the phases many quotes bill separately as discovery and design before development pricing even starts. App work is still delivered that way, now scoped and quoted inside an AI engagement.
Why most Perth quotes say "$40,000 to $250,000+"
The wide range is not dishonest — it is what pricing an undefined brief looks like. One established Perth app agency publishes exactly that range for custom apps, with discovery billed at $3,000–$8,000+ and UX/UI design at $5,000–$15,000 before development is priced. Add those phases and a mid-range custom build lands at $60,000–$120,000, which matches what national agencies charge.
The practical problem is that a range that wide cannot be planned against. You cannot take "$40,000 to $250,000" to a business case, a grant application, or an instant asset write-off decision. Our answer was to sell the scoping phase as its own fixed product, the blueprint, so the number that came out of it was a commitment rather than an estimate that resets once work starts. The AI roadmap sprint on our pricing page does that job now, and it ends with fixed quotes for each build.
What actually drives an app’s cost
Screen count is the metric buyers focus on and the one that matters least. These are the levers that actually move an app between tiers:
- Backend complexity — an app that stores and syncs shared data needs an API, database, and hosting; a self-contained tool does not.
- Real-time features — chat, live tracking, and collaborative editing multiply backend and testing effort.
- Payments — checkout, subscriptions, and payout flows add integration, compliance, and edge-case work.
- Offline behaviour — caching and conflict resolution when connectivity drops is one of the most underestimated line items.
- Integrations — every third-party system (accounting, CRM, government APIs) adds authentication, mapping, and failure handling.
- Admin tooling — the customer-facing app is often half the product; the back office that runs it is the other half.
- Accounts and compliance — authentication, roles, privacy obligations, and audit trails scale with how sensitive the data is.
How to keep a first build near $12,000–$20,000
Most first versions fail commercial planning by carrying features the launch does not need. The discipline that keeps a build in the MVP tier:
- Start from the one workflow that proves the product, and cut everything that does not serve it — feature two can be version two.
- Default to cross-platform. Native iOS and Android as separate builds nearly doubles cost, and few first products need platform-specific performance.
- Buy, don’t build, the commodity parts — authentication, payments, analytics, and notifications all have services that cost less than a week of custom engineering.
- Do the scoping sprint first. Two weeks of scoping is the difference between a fixed price and a range, and its cost is small against a five-figure build.
- Defer the polish that does not change the answer — an MVP validating demand does not need the animation budget of a consumer flagship.
The ongoing costs no quote should hide
After launch, three cost lines continue whether or not you keep building: store fees (Apple’s developer program is US$99 per year; Google Play is a one-off US$25), hosting and backend services that scale with usage, and maintenance — operating system updates, dependency patches, and small fixes. Ask any developer to name these before you sign; a quote that ignores them is quoting a different product than the one you will own.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an MVP app cost in Perth?
From $12,000 with a 6–10 week timeline, covering design, build, testing, and deployment of the smallest product that gives real market answers. We published that as a fixed starting price until September 2026 and it remains a fair Perth benchmark. A paid scoping sprint beforehand is what fixes the scope and the price.
Does one price cover both iOS and Android?
One cross-platform codebase ships to both, which is what our $18,000 package covered until September 2026 and how we still build. Separate native builds are reserved for products that genuinely need platform-specific performance, and cost more.
Why were your prices lower than the $40k–$250k quotes?
Mostly scope discipline, not corner-cutting. Wide quotes price an undefined brief plus separately-billed discovery and design phases. Our packages included those phases, and a paid scoping sprint defined the scope before the build was priced, so the number was smaller and it held. App work is quoted inside an AI engagement now, on the same discipline.
What does it cost to keep an app running after launch?
Apple charges US$99/year and Google a one-off US$25 for store access, hosting typically runs tens to hundreds of dollars a month depending on usage, and you should budget for periodic OS-update maintenance. We scope ongoing support per product rather than forcing a generic retainer.
Can I pay for scoping without committing to a build?
Yes. The $2,500–$3,500 product blueprint did that until September 2026, and the AI roadmap sprint does it now: you leave with a scope, a target architecture, a delivery plan and fixed quotes you can take to us or to any other developer.
